Who founded Discipline Associates?

Discipline Associates is a partnership created by Dr. Richard L. Curwin, a former 7th grade educator, teacher of emotionally disturbed children, college professor and author, and Dr. Allen N. Mendler, an educator, school psychologist, counselor, and author.  Together, they researched, wrote the book, and developed the internationally acclaimed program, Discipline with Dignity.  This program has gained international recognition for its effective discipline, motivation and behavior management techniques, and has generated a variety of related programs focusing on chronically disruptive, hopeless and aggressive children.

DISCIPLINE WITH DIGNITY PROGRAM

What is Discipline with Dignity?

Discipline with Dignity is a program designed for preventing discipline problems from occurring, solving problems when they do occur and resolving difficult and out of control behavior.  Discipline with Dignity has been used in schools, the home and other institutions where children live and learn.  The main goal is to teach young people how to behave responsibly so that civility and respect are valued and lived in our schools.

What is unique about Discipline with Dignity?

Discipline with Dignity is unique because it is effective with all types of children in all settings without relying on formulas, gimmicks, quick fixes, or false promises.  It does not embrace any one philosophy, nor school of psychology.  It contains many specific, practical methods that work.  Educators learn effective tools based on research and common sense!

How successful is Discipline with Dignity with difficult students?

Very! Discipline with Dignity has been used in residential facilities with juvenile delinquents as well as with special needs, behaviorally challenged students in regular and special education programs.  We are very proud of our programs that reach hopeless students, students with severe learning and behavior problems including aggressive, hostile, and violent children and those who are poorly motivated.

I’ve read the book, Discipline with Dignity.  It seems excellent.  Is it hard to learn?

Educators who care about students, who want to make a difference, and who are looking for practical alternatives find Discipline with Dignity useful.  Our feedback indicates that even educators with limited exposure to Discipline with Dignity (i.e. participants in a one day or less training) find many immediately useful methods and strategies.

How does Discipline with Dignity help inner city schools?

The program's unique focus on dignity and hope makes it especially useful to inner city youth and professionals who work with them.

How do I know that a training program is genuinely Discipline with Dignity?

Discipline with Dignity can only be offered by certified, trained associates sanctioned by Discipline Associates.  If the training program you are interested in does not bear our trademark or registration mark, it is not Discipline with Dignity.

What training format works best?

The best training formats are the ones that build in follow-up and commitment.  A multi-year program that trains school or institute personnel to become in-house trainers has proven the most effective long-term.  Discipline Associates can build a format to meet your needs and available resources.

Who will benefit from attending our training seminars?  Are the programs applicable to all grade levels?

YES!  The following greatly benefit: Pre K-12 educators, principals, counselors, administrators, school personnel, university professors, residential treatment staff, parents, and others working with youth.   Our programs can be applied to regular and inclusive classrooms to meet the needs of all children, including at-risk, ADHD, chronically disruptive, hopeless, hard to motivate, or aggressive, hostile, violent students.  Although there is no "magic cure", there are solutions
that work!

How much does a training seminar cost?

All seminars and training programs are individually tailored for the needs and resources of the sponsoring group.  Costs are based on these and other factors such as travel time, number of consultants required, whether or not formal evaluation is requested, and what other resource materials are purchased.  Generally our honorarium fees range from $1,500 – $5,000 depending on such factors as the presenter’s availability, the number of training days booked, the number of participants and the time of year scheduled.  We will work with you to ensure a cost- effective program that fits your staff’s training needs, goals, and budget.  We understand how tight many professional development budgets are so we work very hard to find ways of accommodating all schools with reasonable requests.

What is the price difference in a half-day vs. a full day training session?

Because of travel time, we generally consider a half-day fee similar to a full day fee.  However, we are flexible with honorarium fees upon special circumstances.

Do you offer special program packages?

YES!  We package training, books, leadership manuals, video and audio tapes in various quantities with special discounts, based on volume.

Top of Page

Can more than one presenter conduct an on-site training?

Generally, one presenter is requested and contracted to conduct training.  But unusually large group size or a special focus based upon your goals can lead to the provision of more than one presenter.

Top of Page

Besides Curwin and Mendler, do you have other trainers who conduct seminars?

YES!  We have a staff of professionally trained associates with diverse educational backgrounds available for consultation.  We do our best to match your requests with the associate’s experience and location.  All of our associates are practicing educators who are using Discipline with Dignity in their classrooms, schools and organizations.

How many participants can attend a training session?

For introductory programs, we generally prefer an audience size of 200 or less people.  More intense training is best done in smaller groups.  However, the groups vary in sizes ranging from 5 to 10,000 participants depending on specific requests.  As the audience size increases, the honorarium fee increases on a sliding scale based on the number of participants.
