Consider changing a rule or consequence if an acceptable alternative is proposed!

Whenever a student or parent complains about a rule that you believe is necessary or a consequence that they think is unfair, agree to a change as long as an alternative that is acceptable to you is proposed.  The alternative must have a high likelihood of working.

Remember, effective rules and consequences should promote success, responsibility, or safety.  Be unwavering when it comes to promoting and enforcing these values, but flexible in considering other ways in which these goals can be achieved.

For example, WE EXPECT A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (safety value) is non-negotiable but if a student (or parent) objects to a specific consequence designed to address the infraction, let the student (or parent) offer an alternative that they believe will fix the behavior.

If the alternative seems reasonable, give it a try and assess its effectiveness on the basis of whether or not it works.

Good luck and thanks for stopping by.  Check in next week for another "Tip of the week" coming soon.
