Hey Everyone!

I hope the school year is going well so far.  Before I give you a bunch of helpful tips for diffusing power struggles, I want to remind you to please visit our brand new website tlc-sems.com

My new seminar, Secrets to Successful Classroom Management, is coming to a city near many of you.  The registration fee is only $199 per person and you can receive Continuing Education credit.  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Ok.  Many of you have asked for some specific diffusing statements when difficult students say inappropriate or rude things.  Here are 10 awesome diffusing statements that I use almost every day!

A.  I’m disappointed that you are choosing to use such angry words even though I’m sure there is much to be upset  about.

B.  I am really concerned.  It is very important that I understand why you are so mad.  Please tell me later when I can really listen.

C.  Your words tell me you are bored.  It takes a lot of discipline to hang in there when you are unsure about why we are doing certain things.  Thanks for hanging in there.

D.  I know you are angry, but there is no problem that can’t be solved.  Let’s use words to solve this one.

E.  You just don’t seem like yourself today.  If I can help, great. If not, take a few minutes off and come back when you feel ready to learn.

F.  Throwing things does not make problems go away.  In fact, it makes things worse.  Please use words from now on when we feel so mad.

 G.  I’d love to know what I did to annoy you.  But swearing and calling me names does not help.  We can talk after class though.  Thanks.

 H.  Wow.  I’m sorry you feel that way.  I never mean to pick on any student.  Can you please explain what I said that made you so mad?

 I.  Thanks so much for participating.  I’d prefer you raise your hand with a different finger next time, but I appreciate your enthusiasm to give an answer!

J.  I understand you are upset and I’m sorry.  But no matter how mad you get at me and no matter what you say I still care about you and am glad you are in my class.

The above statements are all designed to help you reach our two main goals as teachers… Keep your kids in class, and get back to teaching.  I hope this helps.

Be sure to check out our website for updated tips.  We will be updating it at least once per week.

Also, my new book, Strategies for Successful Classroom Management, will be out very soon!  I’m really excited and will email all of you as soon as it is released.  Chapter 4 is completely dedicated to fair vs. equal, the concept many of you tell me has drastically improved your teaching.  Ok.  That’s it.  I wish you all continued success.  See you next month!
