We use the following methods to determine what really works in school:
- Does a desired behavior improve when no one is watching?
- Does the strategy used promote motivation to learn?
- Does it increase the dignity of the child and teacher?
- Does it work in the long run as well as the short run?
- Does it make sense?
The highly acclaimed Discipline with Dignity® program is based on the above goals. It has been successful because it is easily adapted to the personality of the teacher and the needs of every student. It works because it is not a quick fix or a one size fits all solution.
Discipline with Dignity®
is based on the following keys to changing behavior.
- Students must want to change.
- Students must see adults do the behavior
- Students must know how to do the behavior.
Rules are clear, specific and developed by teachers and students together. They are based on the values of the school and classroom.
Consequences are not punishments and have an educational component.
Our main focus is to keep our kids in the classroom and for the teacher to get back to teaching. We will always let the student "have the last word." This keeps us out of most power struggle situations.
There are three basic components of DWD.
-
Prevention: Teaching is predictable. You can prevent most disruptions with the right mind set!
-
Action: what we do when a problem occurs. We use both short and long range strategies.
-
Resolution: How we deal with the most difficult situations. We often use creative and unconventional strategies to apply to these most difficult instances.
We hope to see you at a DWD seminar soon!
